Review your VR controller

VR controllers are often slightly different. In this tutorial, you’ll review how you can use your own controller to move and interact in the VR Beginner learning project.

When you’ve finished, you’ll be ready to explore the Prototype Room VR environment.

VR controllers are often slightly different. In this tutorial, you’ll review the interaction options on your own controller.


When you’ve finished, you’ll be ready to start exploring and creating using the VR Beginner Unity Project.


2. Before you begin

In this tutorial, you’ll identify input on your own controller and review controls for the VR experiences included in the VR Beginner Unity Project. It will help to have your controller in front of you.


3. Review your VR controller

Before you begin reviewing controls, identify the following parts of your controller:


  • Thumbstick or trackpad, which you use to give directional input

  • Grip button, on the side of your controller

  • Trigger button, top back of your controller

4. Moving around the experience

First, let’s review the controls for basic movement:


Move your hands


Hold the controllers and move them to move your hands in VR.


Teleport to a new location


To teleport to a new location:


  • Move the directional input forward to activate the teleporter beam

  • Target a predetermined teleporter spot

  • Release the directional input to move to a new location


Rotate the camera


Move the directional input left or right to rotate the camera in VR.


5. Interacting with objects

Next, let’s review how to interact with objects in the VR Beginner experiences:


Pick up an object


Press and hold the grip button to pick up or interact with an object.



Interact with an object


Press the trigger to interact with an object you are already holding.



Move a distant object closer


To move a distant object closer:


  • Hold your palm out facing forward in VR to target an object

  • Move the directional input back to pull a targeted object towards your hand


Turn a dial


Press and hold the grip button and rotate the controller to turn a dial.


Press a button


Apply gentle pressure with your hand on the controller to press a button.


Move a lever


Press and hold the grip button then pull the controller as in the real world to move a lever.
