1. Welcome!
Welcome to Unity’s Professional Development (PD) for Instructors! Over the upcoming three weeks, you will work toward bringing Unity learning to your students, whether you’re just hoping to provide your learners with a brief intro to Unity, prepare them for a Unity certification, or anything in between.
Whatever your specific instructional goals may be, over three weeks in this PD, you will learn foundational Unity skills, set up a Unity course that’s ready for your students, and prepare for success in teaching Unity.
If you’re interested in getting certified yourself, after you complete this three week course, you can go deeper into the Unity Editor and gain the skills and knowledge needed to pass a Unity Game Developer Certification exam. This is the same content your learners would complete if certification is the goal of your course.
Check out the video below to learn more about Unity’s Associate Game Developer certification.
If you’re interested in other certifications for yourself or for your students, feel free to explore all available Unity certifications here.
2. Professional development activities
This professional development experience is multifaceted, combining self-paced content, asynchronous community conversation, and live events. You can find links to each of these course elements from your Professional Development course page.
- Self-paced tutorials: Self-paced tutorials will guide you step-by-step through the learning content, with short quizzes and exercises along the way. Finishing these tutorials is required to complete the professional development experience and get your letter of completion.
- Interaction on Discord: Your cohort is made up of fellow Unity educators taking the course at the same time. Curious how another school, college, or university is designing their student-facing Unity course? Want feedback on an idea? Discuss all of this and more with the others on Discord. Think of this group as your personal brain trust.
- Live events: Finally, join the kick-off, the midpoint live troubleshooting session, and the final wrap-up events at key points throughout this professional development. These hour-long events are for everyone enrolled in the course.
3. Meet your instructor
Meet your Unity instructor for this professional development, Kirk Musngi! Throughout the course, Kirk will run the live events, answer any questions you might have, and help guide you through the learning experience. You’ll meet Kirk more officially soon, but for now here’s a little more about him.
Kirk Musngi is a seasoned professional in game design and education, currently serving as the Senior Community Manager for Unity Learn & Education/Teach Community since August 2023. With a diverse background as an independent consultant in game design and Unity development since December 2014, Kirk previously held roles at Unity from November 2019 to May 2023 as a Content Developer/Trainer and Instructional Designer for Unity Learn. Additional experience includes serving as Chief Technology Officer at NextDayBetter from March 2013 to December 2014, and roles in software development and IT services at Group CS2 LLC and Piedmont Virginia Community College. Kirk began professional experience as an intern at SRRN Games, LLC. 4. Introduce yourself to others in the course
Discord is a one-stop-shop to interact with fellow Unity educators and your instructor for this professional development. In the previous tutorial, you followed a private link inviting you to Discord, where this community lives. If you haven’t already done so, follow that link to join your Class. If you have already followed that link previously, you can simply navigate to Discord from the main course page.
To get started, head over to Discord and introduce yourself. Make sure to include the following pieces of information:
- What subject(s) you teach and at what level.
- Where in the world you teach.
- Your experience with Unity (none is just fine!).
- What you hope to get from this professional development.
