Challenge: Add HDRP Volumetric Fog to the Learning Scene

In this challenge, you’ll apply your own creative competencies to:

  • Implement Volumetric Fog in the learning Scene
  • Calibrate the Volumetric Fog to create your desired effect
  • Evaluate the impact on the atmosphere of the room

This challenge is part of Buried Memories: High Fidelity Game Visuals.

1. Challenge overview

In Creating cinematic visuals with Volumetric Fog, you explored how Volumetric Fog was used in the Buried Memories: Serekh demo to realize the atmosphere established in the concept art.

In this challenge, you’ll use Volumetric Fog within the leaning Scene for this course, calibrating it to create a mysterious atmospheric effect.

Challenge steps

In this challenge, you will:

  • Define your evaluation criteria
  • Implement HDRP Volumetric Fog
  • Evaluate the potential impact on a player

2. Before you begin

If you haven’t already done so, download the course Learning Scene.

3. Supporting content

To help you complete this challenge, review the following:

4. Define your evaluation criteria

Before you implement Volumetric Fog in the learning Scene, consider how you will evaluate its success at creating a mysterious atmosphere. You can do this by setting clear evaluation criteria, and using these as a guide when assessing your work in progress.

One useful basis for evaluation criteria is the four domains of high visual fidelity, for example:

  • Does the Volumetric Fog implementation match the creative vision established in the Buried Memories: Serekh concept art? (Scope)
  • Would the implementation increase the player’s sense of immersion and make a positive impact on game feel? (Performance)
  • Does the implementation combine cohesively with lighting and any effects in the Scene? (Polish)

You can also ask a friend or colleague to help you evaluate your performance against the criteria you choose. It can be helpful to get an outside perspective when evaluating creative work and considering the perspectives of different potential players.

5. Implement and configure HDRP Volumetric Fog

To implement and configure HDRP Volumetric Fog in the learning Scene:

1. Open the Learning Scene in Unity Editor. You may also want to open the demo too. This will enable you to review the exact configuration used in the Project, to use as a starting point for your own experimentation.

2. Create and configure HDRP Volumetric Fog. If you need to, review the guidance in Creating Volumetric Fog.

3. Use your evaluation criteria and the implementation in the Buried Memories: Serekh demo to evaluate your Volumetric Fog.

6. Summary

In this challenge, you have:

  • Implemented Volumetric Fog in the learning Scene
  • Calibrated the Volumetric Fog to create your desired effect
  • Evaluated the impact on the atmosphere of the room
