Create with Code: Game Jam Submissions

This tutorial will cover:

  • Building your WebGL game
  • Uploading your game to Unity Play
  • Submitting your game as a Create with Code: Game Jam entry

Languages available:

1. Overview

If you’re reading this tutorial with a finished game ready to upload; congratulations! You’re at the final step of your Game Jam journey! All that’s left to do now is upload your game online, thus entering it as an official Game Jam entry.

Hopefully you have left at least an hour to complete this step, to account for building and uploading time (and any final QA of the WebGL build!). With your Unity Editor open and your game ready to be shared, let’s cover the steps to share your creation with everyone else!

2. General WebGL Upload Instructions

For the Create with Code: Game Jam, we have created a Submissions Page on Unity’s Connect platform. The steps outlined below are specific for uploading to this ecosystem, and may not be applicable for other Game Jams hosted on various other platforms. For general WebGL building steps, navigate to this tutorial.

3. Uploading your Create with Code: Game Jam Game

Before you start building your project, double check that all your changes are saved, all known critical bugs and issues have been resolved, and that you have filled out the Player settings found in Edit > Project Settings.

Note: If you jammed as part of a team, only one team member needs to build, upload and share the game to enter it as a submission.

With a final check completed, navigate to this tutorial to check how to build and upload your game. This tutorial was written to support Unity Microgames, but the process for uploading your Game Jam game is identical.

When you arrive at the Join & Share step, do not continue the WebGL tutorial, but ensure you have a link to your uploaded return to this tutorial, and find out how to turn your game into a Create with Code: Game Jam entry.

4. Entering your game as a Create with Code: Game Jam Entry

With your game uploaded to Unity Connect, it’s now time to enter it as a Create with Code: Game Jam Submission!

This will take you to the Post Submission page.

Please ensure your submission has;

  • A Title
  • A Header
  • A Description

In the panel on the right, attach a thumbnail to your submission. This image will appear on all cards and previews of your game, and will be the first thing your potential players will see alongside the title.

For the Add Contributors, list any team members you collaborated with on this project. If you worked alone, leave this section blank.

You can Add Tags to give players a better idea of what to expect from your game. This section is optional.

Make sure you add the link to your Connect Submission in the Add Website field. This will be how others access the playable build of your game!

Once all this information is filled in, click the Post button on the upper right corner of the website.

You’re almost done now! Ensure that your submission displays and links to your game correctly. Do a final playthrough of the game - does the audio work? Are graphics displaying correctly within the browser? Does the game control and operate as expected?

If the answer to these questions is yes - congratulations! You have successfully submitted your game as a Create with Code: Game Jam entry. Well done on completing a full game, from design to implementation within one weekend! Take some time to rest - you deserve it!

5. What’s Next?

On Friday October 30th, we will host an hour-long playathon session. During this webinar, our favorite games will be played live on air, alongside winner announcements. The link to access this playathon will be posted in the Discord server so make sure you don’t miss it! After the Play-a-thon event concludes, the Discord server will be closed.

At the end of the Play-a-thon, we will post a new tutorial to this Learn Project where you’ll be able to watch a recording of the Play-a-thon, and read about some recommended next steps after finishing a Game Jam.

Until this session, take some time to play through the other Jam entries! Give constructive feedback to other games, whilst gathering some of your own. Think about how you could improve or change your game based on comments received from other jammers.
