Overview of ProBuilder, PolyBrush, and FBX Exporter

ProBuilder and PolyBrush are in-editor tools that allow you to create and modify custom meshes with ease, while the FBX Exporter allows you to smoothly export assets from Unity to Maya and back again with minimal effort. In this tutorial, you'll explore some of the features and uses for ProBuilder, PolyBrush, and FBX Exporter.

Languages available:

1. What is ProBuilder?

Now part of Unity, ProBuilder is a unique hybrid of 3D modeling and level design tools, optimized for building simple geometry but capable of detailed editing and UV unwrapping too.

ProBuilder L1

Use ProBuilder to quickly prototype structures, complex terrain features, vehicles and weapons, or to make custom collision geometry, trigger zones or nav meshes.

2. What is PolyBrush?

Polybrush enables you to blend textures and colors, sculpt meshes, and scatter objects directly in the Unity Editor.

Combined with ProBuilder, Polybrush gives you a complete in-editor level design solution.

3. What is the FBX Exporter?

FBX Exporter allows you to take advantage of Unity’s seamless round-tripping with digital content-creation tools (like Maya) so you can further polish models with your favorite tools.

In particular, this round-trip workflow enables you to export Unity scenes to FBX, import into Maya, Maya LT, or 3ds Max using an artist-friendly interface, export Unity-ready FBX geometry and animation, and safely merge your changes back into those Assets to continue your work.

The exporter provides support for GameObject hierarchies, Materials, Textures, Cameras, Lights, Skinned Meshes, and Animation. The Unity FBX importer provides support for hierarchies, Materials, Textures, Stingray Physically Based Shader (PBS), Cameras, Animation and Animated custom properties (when present in the FBX file).

4. Why use these tools?

Combining these tools and integrating them into your workflow allows you quickly create content right in Unity without the need for any external software. You can create grey-boxed levels and models for rapid prototyping and functionality testing.

These tools are robust and allow you to build out entire experiences using assets created entirely with ProBuilder and PolyBrush.
