The Unity Terrain Editor enables you to create detailed and realistic terrains. Using the provided sets of Terrain tools, you are able to efficiently design optimized landscapes with ease. In this tutorial, you will learn how to create and customize a terrain using specific tools and techniques, ranging from shaping the landscape, adding trees, and using brushes to enhance your terrain with additional details. By the end of the tutorial, you will have a solid understanding of how powerful and versatile the Terrain Editor can be, and how easy it is to create customized terrains for your projects.

Based on what you learned in the preceding tutorials, the following exercise is designed to challenge you on painting the terrain you created in 

Before you begin

Add textures to the paint brush.  

 Use the brushes to paint the texture onto the terrain. 

Based on what you learned in the preceding tutorials, the following exercise is designed to challenge you on adding details and foliage to the terrain you have created.

 Add the Conifer tree prefab to the trees tool in the Terrain window 

Select the Conifer tree and use the brushes to paint trees in the scene

Add a grass detail to the Terrain window

Use the brush to paint in the grass textures

Add and configure a water Prefab to the scene to finish it off

This project covers the basics of Unity’s Terrain tool, the project demonstrates sculpting terrains, painting textures, adding trees and models, as well as details such as grass. In addition to the terrain tool, the project takes advantage of Unity’s standard assets to add water and speed tree assets to the scene.

The purpose of this challenge is take what you learned in the preceding tutorials and create and sculpt your own terrain. We do not provide specific step-by-step instructions to complete the challenge so as you work, if you are struggling with getting through this challenge, check out our live session on "Introduction to Terrain Editor", where a Unity Certified Instructor walked through how to complete this challenge. You can either register for the session if it hasn't aired yet, or watch the recording from the live session. 

 Pro tip: Add all the ones you want to use at once 

Pro Tip: Start painting starting with the base material (rock) and working up to surface details (sand and snow)

Pro Tip:Add textures based on regions (snow up high, sand in valley areas, rock on vertical faces)
