Unity allows you to create simple animations using a standard set of tools. In this tutorial, you'll use Unity's keyframes, Playhead, Animation Timeline, and Animation Curves to create simple animations.

This project will take us through the process of reusing Animation Clips, both imported and custom. We will also review how to retarget imported animation clips on different biped, humanoid models. One of the most powerful features of Mecanim is retargeting of humanoid animations. This means that with relative ease, you can apply the same set of animations to various character models. Keep in mind that retargeting is only possible for humanoid models, where an Avatar has been configured, because this gives us a correspondence between the models’ bone structure. Continue on to learn about animation re-using and re-targeting, in the context of humanoid models.

You’ll apply these concepts to add animation to objects and characters in your scenes, and even control when the animation gets played.

Animation and rigging is a specialized craft in the development process. Creating animation rigs is a time consuming process and sometimes it takes several people to create a rig that meets all of the needs of a project. With Unity’s Animation Rigging tools, the amount of time and manpower is reduced because of the flexibility and robustness of these tools.

When you wish to make a simple, basic animation of an object within your scene, changing its position, size, or simply rotating it can all be done easily through the Timeline Editor window using keyframe animation. In this tutorial, you'll create a basic animation by recording the changing properties of a GameObject as keyframes in Timeline.

Sprite Animations are animation clips that are created for 2D assets. There are various ways to create Sprite Animations. One way is to create them from a Sprite Sheet, a collection of Sprites arranged in a grid. The Sprites are then compiled into an Animation Clip that will play each Sprite in order to create the animation, much like a flipbook. Sprite Animations can also be created by using keyframe animation in Unity, via the Animation window.

In this challenge, you will practice re-targeting imported animations for different biped models. Using an imported animation from Mixamo, you will create a new animator Controller, configure the humanoid model, and add imported Animation Clip as a new animation state.

Configure a humanoid rig for use with the Humanoid Animation system. This session explores how to bring our characters and world to life by creating keyframe basic animation in the Animation window using the Dopesheet and Curve Editor. From there, you’ll learn how to use the Timeline to record and retarget animation, then blend animated clips together, as well as how to blend shapes in facial animation to transition between characters’ facial expressions. This segment finishes by taking a look at Unity’s new Animation Rigging toolset.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to set up animation clips in Unity after they have been imported from an external application, such as Maya, 3ds Max, or Blender, via an FBX file.
